The Platform Group: Rebranding A Bold Affordable Housing Advocacy Organization.

A New Name for a Longstanding Mission

The PlatFORM Group was founded in 1972 as the private development arm of Rockford Housing Authority. It was then named Rockford Housing Development Corporation, a literal, didactic label with few inspiring qualities that did nothing to suggest the qualitative aspects of the organization’s humanistic mission.

Today, the current organization is bravely tackling one of Rockford’s most urgent challenges: the growing shortage of safe, healthy, affordable housing. Its board felt a need to raise its profile to call attention to Rockford’s worsening Affordable Housing crisis.

Their work goes beyond brick and mortar development, aiming to shift public perception, reduce the stigma that unfairly envelops affordable housing for working families – and make housing equity a community-wide priority.

Having previously collaborated with GrahamSpencer while members of the Rockford Housing Authority administration and board, it was natural of the PlatFORM Group to call on GS to lead a strategic rebrand.

The project spans from research and strategy to a new name, new visual identity, new website, a refreshed social media presence – and, a multi-chapter storytelling video to educate people and inspire understanding and action.

01 The new PlatFORM Identity and Tagline

Confronting Rockford’s Housing Crisis & Stigma

Affordable Housing in Rockford is a deeply misunderstood issue. Despite a shortage of thousands of units, many see it as someone else’s problem–or resist solutions in their own neighborhoods. RHDC’s name and communications weren’t helping the board break through these barriers.

Our GSearch research revealed:

  • The need to focus on data, solutions and human stories.
  • A call for clear, accessible language that connects with diverse audiences.
  • A strong desire for RHDC to lead public education and advocacy efforts.

Building a Platform for Change

Renaming & Rebranding:
We developed the name PlatFORM Group to convey a foundation for building, a stage for advocacy and a place where collaboration can exist and flourish. The new visual identity is modern, approachable and adaptable across platforms.

Online Frontline:
The new website, platformrockford.org, serves as:
• An educational resource on housing issues and solutions.
• A showcase for transformational projects like the $47M South Avon Street development PlatFORM Group offers as its first large-scale project in Southwest Rockford.
• A connection point for partners, residents and advocates.
• A literal platform for change and equitable progress.

Social Media Storytelling:
We launched coordinated social channels to share:
• Success stories from residents.
• Expert insights on housing, health and economic impact from near and afar.
• Calls to action for policy and community support.

Can Film Expose the Crisis & Inspire Solutions?

GS is producing a series of short educational films to bring the Affordable Housing conversation to life–amidst the backdrop of a City of Rockford study that identifies a need for between 6,000 and 9,200 new homes before 2032–many of them classified as “affordable.”

  • The videos will:
  • Highlight the human impact of housing instability.
  • Fight the unfair stigma around Affordable Housing
  • Show real-world examples of solutions that work.
  • Seek to inspire public and private sector collaboration.
  • Be published and promoted via organic and paid social and digital publishing.

Shifting the Conversation, Building Momentum, Creating Impact

The rebrand has positioned the PlatFORM Group as a highly credible, professional and inspiring leader in Rockford’s housing conversation. Early results include:

  • Increased engagement with city and regional leaders.
  • Stronger public recognition and media visibility.
  • A unified platform for both development projects and community education.

At GS, we believe deeply in the PlatFORM Group’s board and its egalitarian, functional mission. We’re proud to provide the tools, strategy and creative execution that helps them build not just rooftops, but a true understanding in a community that urgently needs both. If your organization is working to change minds, inspire action and create lasting impact, we’d be honored to help you build your own unique platform for change.
