One Building. Four High Schools. One Future. How GSearch Helped GrahamSpencer Turn RPS 205’s New Career and Technical Education Center into The QUAD.

Rockford Public Schools was building something truly unique.

The new College and Career Education Center would bring students from Auburn, East, Guilford and Jefferson high schools under one roof to explore careers, learn technical skills and train on industry-grade equipment too specialized and expensive to replicate at four separate schools.

While the idea was ambitious, the working name was not. District leaders knew that everything about a place designed to get students excited about their futures ought to feel exciting.

RPS 205 asked GrahamSpencer to help.

01 Human Connections

We Started With Discovery.

Naming is never where we begin a naming assignment.

Through GSearch, our proprietary research, analysis and planning process, we talked with district leaders, educators and students about what the new center needed to accomplish—practically, educationally and culturally.

We studied successful career and technical education programs and facilities elsewhere. We considered how the center fit within the larger RPS 205 ecosystem. And we listened closely for an idea strong enough to organize everything that would follow.

One was hiding in plain sight.

02 The QUAD Video

Four high schools sharing one building.

Students would come from four different school cultures, traditions and identities. Nobody wanted them to leave that school pride at the QUAD’s front door. But inside this building, students from across the district would learn side by side, use the same equipment and prepare for many of the same sorts of opportunities.

The center needed an identity that acknowledged all four schools without belonging to just one of them.

That insight led us to The QUAD.

A Name With More Than One Job

Literally, QUAD means four.

Four RPS 205 high schools. Four distinct student bodies. Four communities coming together in one shared place making a beautiful new community. But the name does something else we liked just as much.

It Gives the Building a Sense of Place.

College campuses have had quads for generations: central places where people cross paths, gather and become part of something larger than themselves. The word carries many decades of association with education, community and belonging.

And unlike an antiseptic institutional acronym, QUAD works naturally in conversation. In fact, it flows and it feels good.

I have class at the QUAD.

We’re heading to the QUAD.

Meet me at the QUAD.

That was important because we wanted to help create a vibe students could not only embrace, but own.

Building a Brand Students Would Love

With the name in place, GrahamSpencer developed The QUAD’s positioning, messaging and visual identity around the same central idea: four schools coming together around a shared future.

The identity is energetic, flexible and unmistakably built around four. We carried it into environmental graphics concepts, photography, video, apparel, stickers, launch materials and communications—creating a brand system capable of living everywhere from the side of a building to the front of a t-shirt.

Then something happened that no brand presentation can predict.

05 BROCHURE

Students Started Wearing It.

Before RPS 205 had even officially introduced the new identity, QUAD t-shirts, stickers and other swag were already showing up on students, made by students. At The QUAD.

An identity we made for students was becoming an identity claimed by students.

Then the Building Had to Become the Brand

Now a year later, The QUAD has begun to do exactly that.

In spring 2026, GrahamSpencer helped RPS 205 promote the inaugural QUAD Showcase, inviting families, community members and employers inside to see what students were learning.

They saw working labs and classrooms. Students demonstrating technical skills. Industry-grade equipment in use. And young people getting hands-on exposure to careers that will make a difference to the future of the Rockford region.

The event made tangible what had been embedded in the brand from the beginning: Four schools were sharing resources, opportunities and a new way for students across RPS 205 to prepare for their futures.

06 The QUAD campus

Graham Spencer perfectly captured the spirit of college and career readiness at The Quad. From stunning student photography to bringing our website to life, their work gave our mission a dynamic digital presence. The video they produced truly speaks for itself—engaging, authentic, and beautifully crafted.

If your organization is ready to create brand infrastructure capable of carrying meaning for decades, we would welcome a conversation.
